PoE (Power Over Ethernet) delivers data and power over a single Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet cable. This improves network’s flexibility and scalability by remotely powering PoE devices at locations where no power outlet is available. PoE injectors are one of the easiest ways to start using Power Over Ethernet in your network. It is ideal for enhancing already existing cabling with power supply for PoE devices like surveillance cameras.

What is a PoE (Power Over Ethernet) Injector?

PoE injector (power injector) is a device that adds electrical power to an Ethernet cable for PoE (Power Over Ethernet) enabled equipment. The main benefit of PoE is to use a single cable for both power and network.

PoE Injectors also referred to as midspan as they usually used with the existing non-PoE network to inject in certain cables with PoE. The devices can support up to Gigabit speeds while powering complaint devices over one single cable. Power injector is perfect for low power devices that you want to set up in locations with no power outlet like IP cameras or Access points.

Now, when it comes to PoE power supply devices, many get confused about whether to choose a PoE injector or PoE switch.

What’s the difference between PoE Switch and Injector?

Well, we’ll make a comparison and help you choose between the two.

Power over Ethernet switch is a network switch that has PoE injection built-in. When connected with several network devices, a PoE switch can support power and data transmission over a single Ethernet cable at the same time. It simplifies the cabling process and reduces network costs. PoE switch offers flexibility and reliability, which makes it a better choice for connecting wireless APs, VoIP phones and IP Camera. The main benefit of PoE Switch is value for money when you need to power more than a couple of PoE devices.

Injector performs a similar function, but in some cases it is more practical to inject PoE only in for a single devices and not every Ethernet cable in your household. Injector is ideal when you need to power only one or two PoE devices.

Most Common questions about PoE injectors

What is the difference between PoE injector and PoE+ injector?

  • The main difference between the PoE Injector and PoE+ Injector is the maximum amount of power provided over each standard. PoE (802.3af) can deliver a power of 15.4W over Cat5 cables whereas PoE+ (802.3at) can deliver a power of 30W over Cat5 cables.  But, the power available to the devices will be 25.5W with PoE+ injector.
  • Another major difference between the two is the IEEE standards. PoE is 802.3af whereas PoE+ is 802.3at. In simple words, if you’re looking for an injector specifically for your phone or one device, you can just consider PoE as the power required is less and it can be managed with power injector. However, if you’re looking to create a more powerful network with many discrete devices and don’t want any limitations, then PoE+ will be the right choice.

What’s the difference between passive PoE injector and active PoE injector?

  • Active PoE refers to any PoE that negotiates the correct voltage between the PoE powered device and the switch. However, passive PoE does no such negotiation and always sends electric current over the Ethernet cable at a specific voltage regardless of the device it’s going to.
  • Also, if your device uses 802.3at or 802.3af, it is considered to use active PoE. It means the PoE device will check the power coming in and if by any chance, it doesn’t meet the device requirements it won’t power up. Active PoE does a hand shake between the receiving and sending PoE devices and won’t power up unless the receiving device provides the proper acknowledgement.
  • On the other hand, passive PoE generally refers to a device using PoE to power that is not 802.3at/af. It includes items like radio antennas or cameras as they run on 18-48V DC PoE. As passive PoE doesn’t do a hand shake, it’s essential to know the PoE voltage requirement of your device before plugging and powering it up.

How to use power injector?

Using PoE injectors is very simple. As with any other PoE enabled network the main thing you need to make sure is that you will not use PoE with non-PoE devices. PoE splitter is the device that will help you to separate power from PoE enabled ethernet cable.

  • For PoE enabled devices: On the input side – Connect the PoE injector to its power adapter and a data source i.e. a switch or a router. On the output side – Connect the PoE injector to a PD like VoIP phone, an access point, or a PoE camera.
  • For non-PoE devices: On the output side – Connect the injector to a splitter. Then, connect it to a non-PoE device. On the input side – Connect the PoE injector to a data source and its power adapter.

How to use PoE injector for the camera?

  1. Firstly, make sure all the equipment including PoE injector, IP camera and management of camera is working.
  2. Then, connect the Ethernet cable to the PoE injector’s data + power port and into the IP camera’s PoE port.
  3. Next, mount your IP camera in place and make sure the light is adequate to capture a clear image.
  4. You need to connect a second Ethernet cable from injector’s data port into a switch.
  5. Lastly, plug the injector power cord into a local AC electrical outlet.

Most commonly asked questions

What’s the difference between injector and splitter?

An injector takes DC + Ethernet and turns the signal into PoE. However, a Splitter takes PoE and outputs Ethernet + DC Power.

Is there a need of PoE injector for each IP camera that wants to work with power and data?

Yes. One can also get PoE switch, but they are quite expensive.

Verdict

BV-Tech Single Gigabit Port Power over Ethernet Plus PoE+ Injector is perfect for IT specialists as they can combine various pieces to create one big PoE row with a stable connection. This device can be operated for days without heating up that makes it a reliable pick for use with always-online devices. The device has a special groove on the side that lets you connect an unlimited number of injectors to create a row of ports and power multiple devices at once.

However, the power cord of this device is quite short, so it restricts the placement options. This injector has its own power supply but to increase the efficiency; you need to keep the injector plugged in.Although there are a few complaints about the design and ease of use of this injector, the setup of this device doesn’t take long.

So, if you like your system clean with all the cables routed efficiently and carefully, you can try this injector.

Our opinion

If you want to save money on installation and equipment costs, this TRENDnet PoE injector would be a good choice. The effectiveness of the device is the main reason why it’s better than others.

This device Splits a gigabit PoE signal into separate power and gigabit data sources. Also, its auto-sensing technology delivers 15.4W to 802.3af PoE devices. You should consider this device if you want a power injector that delivers high availability and scalability.

Furthermore, the device works flawlessly and smoothly and provides plenty of power for single device. The device is very simple and easy to use as well.
