This is another clever use of smart devices. My wife is a keen gardener. This means my duty is to water the plants on time. There were a couple of instances where I forgot to do so with severe consequences (for plants as well). No more!
This routine is part of the Automation Bank, a community-driven list of over 50 practical automation ideas for your smart home. Read more about Automation Bank or search ideas by room, by device or by use case. Also, have a look at best home automation ideas as voted by our users.
Simple automation below will make sure your plans are always watered (and your wife is happy)
How Does It Work?
- There are two ways to record if your plans had enough moisture:
- Use weather forecast provider (like DarkSky) which has a specific sensor to monitor rain in your locations
- More accurate but more expensive is to use a dedicated sensor like Mi Flora. You do not need to buy the sensors for each plant. Just have a routine way to do so and water the plant with the sensor last (or first).
- If the moisture readings below the threshold or you have more then certain dry days trigger the action.
- There are two main actions you can have:
- Notification – it will simply send a message to your mobile asking to water the plants
- Switch on irrigation system like RainMachine or Rachio
