Watching TV is all about the experience and the appropriate lighting is a significant part of it. That is why some people would dim the light in the room with TV (or Projector).
This routine is part of the Automation Bank, a community-driven list of over 50 practical automation ideas for your smart home. Read more about Automation Bank or search ideas by room, by device or by use case. Also, have a look at best home automation ideas as voted by our users.
The automation routine below uses Chromecast or any connected TV to trigger a change in lighting automatically to help you to enjoy the show.
How Does It Work?
This is quite a complex routine to implement. You would need to have Chromecast or Smart TV + Smart Lights. Smart switches would nor work in this
- Trigger: the status of Chromecast or TV is changing from “idle” to “playing”
- Condition: automation should only work if (a) your lights are on full brightness or (b) it is dark enough to switch on lights
- Action: Your smart lights will switch to “Movie” mode which is usually reduced brightness and warm color temperature. All the other lights in the room should be also connected to your smart home so you can switch them off.
- You can also switch back to the normal lightning when the movie is stopped
Advanced:
A lot of room for further automation in this routine.
- Automate switching on TV/amplifier or opening the projector screen with our TV Automation routine
- Pause the movie when you receive a call, the baby woke up or somebody is at your door
- Dynamically change the background color based on what is on the screen
- Pause when somebody left the room to pick up some snacks using the face recognition to count the number of faces
What Do You Need?
